Frequently Asked Questions - ThunderBirthDay

These are the frequently asked questions for the ThunderBirthDay extension.

Unfortunately, the year is required for each birthday.

Why is that? The reason is that each birthday is translated as a recurring event in Lightning. Each such event needs a first occurence, usually the the day the person was actually born. This is a technical requirement of Lightning. If this information is missing, when should the recurring event start? If you have a sensible answer to this question, please let me know, so I can put the feature on the wishlist.

ThunderBirthDay doesn't have reminders because it requires some time and thinking, which I haven't had yet. I really hope that I will have it in the future and that the next major version will come with reminders!

The problem is, that calendars which support reminders cannot be read-only (Lightning has to remember somewhere that a reminder has been dismissed!). If a calendar is not read-only, the user will also have the possibility to edit date, title, description, recurrence etc of existing events and to add new ones. ThunderBirthDay events are quite special, though, as they are always recurring yearly without exception, always one day events, always connected to an existing person in the addressbook, etc. To provide a full-featured (non-read-only) calendar, ThunderBirthDay would require a lot more logic than it does in read-only mode. I do have ideas how to solve the problem, but didn't have time to implement them. Hopefully this will be different in the future!

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Furthermore, I don't think that it will be added in the future as I don't see any feasible solution.

The problem is that ThunderBirthDay needs to access the address book. It uses parts of Thunderbird to do that. When running as a Thunderbird add-on, this is easy, whereas it is (almost) impossibile to do that in Sunbird. If you are a developer, feel free to prove me wrong ;-)

Don't get me wrong, but you might have read the error message too quickly!

The link provided on the download page is correct! The error message isn't saying that the page could not have been found, but that the SSL certificate could not be verified. That's because the author did not buy a SSL certificate, but created it's own. You can add an exception for this site, but understand that you should NEVER DO THIS FOR YOUR BANKS WEB SITE!!!

To download MoreFunctionsForAddressBook go on the page below, add the exception, scroll all the way down, right click on the link and choose Save target as.... Then open Thunderbird and install the new extension there.

If you really did follow these steps, but the extension can really not be found, please let me know!

Yes, I know of several working solutions. One of them is BirdieSync. According to some users and the developper of the software, synchronization works fine. Unfortunately, the software isn't free, but you can try it for 21 days.

Another software that works according to some users is OpenSync/blueZync. This solution is for advanced linux users only, as it is still under heavy development and not that easy to set up.

Unfortunately, solutions that synchronize ICS-files don't work because ThunderBirthDay doesn't store its events in a file (they are read from the address book while Thunderbird is running).

If you know a working solution, please let me know! Even if it's only one line, please drop me a note, so I can list it here!
